Mogadishu's skyline in 2035 will not be built by accident. Here's what I believe it should look like — and who will shape it.
Most cities don't choose their skyline. It happens to them, plot by plot, while no one is paying attention. Mogadishu still has time to choose.
The city we are becoming
Drive through Hodan, Wadajir, or the new corridors near the airport road and you'll see it: a city in motion. Mid-rises rising next to single-story compounds. New facades next to twenty-year-old structures. Cranes above neighborhoods that didn't have paved roads five years ago.
This is not a construction boom. This is a re-formation of an entire urban identity.
What I want our skyline to stand for
I want a Mogadishu skyline that says three things to anyone who lands at Aden Adde:
- We are serious about quality, not just quantity.
- We design for our climate, our culture, and our coastline — not for someone else's aesthetic.
- We are building a city our children will not want to leave.
What worries me
I worry about copy-paste towers that ignore Somali heritage. I worry about overbuilt corridors with no infrastructure underneath them. I worry about developers chasing the next launch instead of the next decade.
A beautiful tower on a street with no drainage is not progress. It's a postcard with a problem.
What I'm betting on
I'm betting on the next generation of Somali developers — many of them diaspora-trained, many of them young, almost all of them more ambitious than the market gives them credit for. They are the ones who will quietly raise the standard.
Ifiye's role is smaller but specific: to make sure that the buildings worth standing get the buyers they deserve, and that the buyers backing this city get properties that hold their value for thirty years, not three.
The skyline is a decision
Every plot sold today is a vote for what Mogadishu becomes. I'd rather we vote consciously.
